PRESS RELEASE: White House Waives Clean Air Act Protections, OKs Sale of More Ethanol in Gasoline
Washington, D.C. (May 8, 2018) — The Trump Administration announced it would waive Clean Air Act protections and allow the sale of gasoline with 15 percent ethanol (E15) across the United States—a move that the National Wildlife Federation strongly opposes. Below is an on-the-record statement from David DeGennaro, agriculture policy specialist with the National Wildlife Federation. David can be reached directly at (202) 797-6654.
“The latest word from today’s White House meeting on an ethanol ‘fix’ is nothing but bad news. Weakening Clean Air Act protections and incentivizing corn ethanol exports to drive more production doubles down on a policy that has already been a disaster for the environment. These changes would move us in the wrong direction as we try to deal with the massive challenges of climate change, water pollution, and declining wildlife populations. Congress needs to step in, put the public interest ahead of the Big Corn and Big Oil special interests, and reform the ethanol mandate before it does more damage.”
